The Law Academy issue was a recent scenario that
showcased the urge in need for student politics and for the better
treatment for the students to be provided in the campus. The students of
Law Academy college, Peroorkada were suffering from a lot of discrimination and
lack of freedom from the college Principal for a long time. There were small
protests burning inside the campus, but the so called Law Academy Strike bursted
into a full stretch strike on behalf of Jishnu Pranoy, a first year engineering
student of Nehru college of Engineering,Thrissur committed suicide, allegedly
following harassment by college authorities.
The Law Academy strike was started by Kerala
Students Union (KSU) and later on MSF,AISF,ABVP,AIDSO and SFI joined the
strike. The students of Law Academy continued their strike asking for the
resignation of Dr P.Lekshmi Nair who was the Principal. There were a lot of
complaints against her which also includes teasing the students with the caste
name. She was also accused to have entered the principal post by illegal ways
and the disputes regarding her qualifications still stands questioned. The main
advantage of the rise of Law Academy issue was that new findings were brought
before the media regarding the issue of land for running the Academy. It was
found that the land allotted was illegally used for private as well as
commercial purposes without the permission of concerned authorities.
Student Federation of India(SFI) have earlier talked
with the college management and have made some sort of agreements which said
that the Principal will step back from the post for a term of five years. But
that doesn’t meet the need since the students were more concerned whether she
would return after five years and if so the bad situation will be restored
again. As a result all the student unions continued their strike except SFI who
claimed that all issues are solved. And
the 29 day strike was called off when the State education Minister C
Ravendranath took an initiative to have a meeting with the management and
student representatives . An agreement
has been signed by the representatives of the management and students. The
management declared that Dr. Lekshmi Nair has been removed from the post of
Principal. The management also agreed to appoint a new principal with all
required qualification as prescribed by Kerala University soon. With the new
decisions declared Congress leader K
Muraleedharan, BJP leaders K Surendran and V.V. Rajesh ended their hunger strike. The students of
Law Academy celebrated the news of their victory. And the classes will resume
from Monday,13th of February.
